Brčko Free of Mines

The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has left behind a grim legacy of mines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW), which can be found in almost all parts of the country and have a serious impact on the society. The mine contamination in Brčko exceeds 13 million m2.

Since 2003 Switzerland has been continuously supporting Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) mine action programme in BiH.  Under the current project, NPA will implement a needs based mine action response in Brčko District focusing on land release of contaminated areas in high and medium affected communities. Switzerland’s contribution will be used to support manual demining activities within the period 1 November 2021-31 October 2022, to initiate operations and complete Phase1 of the Land Release process on prioritized mine suspected area “Brcko sjever “(totalling 2,770,000 m2 of mine contaminated land).

The project will not only contribute to public safety, but also to creation of favourable environment for the development of tourism, productive use of agricultural land, and the expropriation and geodetic measurements for the construction of a highway section Bijeljina-Brčko-Vukosavlje. It will also contribute to the completion initiative Brčko District BiH Free of Mines 2021- 2024.
