Wastewater Collection and Treatment Zenica (WWZE)

The Wastewater Colection and Treatment Zenica (WWZE) aims to ensure the collection and treatment of the municipal wastewater of the City of Zenica in an environmentally hygienic manner and, at costs affordable for citizens. This is to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of the population and to the protection of the environment, specifically the River Bosna and its tributaries in Zenica and downstream localities. Additionally, the project will strengthen the operational and management capacities of the Public Water Utility related to wastewater collection and treatment.

IMPROVING WASTEWATER SERVICES AND QUALITY OF WATER IN THE RIVER BOSNA

Only 41% of the population of Bosnia and Herzego- vina (BiH) have access to wastewater services and only 15% of the population is covered by waste- water treatment. This is far below the needs to en- sure a clean and healthy environment and reach standards as set in the directives of the European Union. Approximately 75% of the urban population of Zenica is connected to the municipal sewage network, while the local communities surrounding Zenica are not. The municipal wastewater is be- ing discharged into the River Bosna without any treatment, mixed with industrial wastewater. The discharge of untreated wastewater leads to consid- erable pollution of the water in the river and health risks for the population.

THE CITIZENS IN ZENICA AND DOWNSTREAM RIVER BOSNA BENEFIT FROM THE PROJECT

The project entails the construction of a wastewa- ter treatment plant (WWTP), rehabilitation and ex- tension of the municipal sewage network and main collectors, and the inclusion of more local communi- ties in the municipal sewage network. It will ensure the complete separation of municipal and industri- al wastewater and the integration of measures for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) as necessary. Ad- ditionally, support to the Corporate Development of the Public Water Utility will enable its commercial sustainability within a functioning institutional and regulatory framework in the sector of water services. Federal institutions will ensure the implementation of adequate measures by the industrial polluters di- rectly discharging their wastewater in the River Bos- na and their tributaries within the City of Zenica. Low scale measures for integrated urban development are planned, e.g. the construction of a 1.8 km bike lane with associated greening measures on the right bank of the River Bosna. The project will positive- ly affect over 200,000 people in Zenica and down- stream settlements.

LARGE-SCALE INVESTMENT FOR A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT

The Wastewater Zenica project is being implement- ed from 2018 to 2023, ensuring investments of 20.5 million Euros. The Government of Switzerland will do- nate 5 million Euros and the German Government will donate 14.5 million Euros through the German Devel- opment Bank (KfW). The City of Zenica will contribute

1.0 million Euros. The project is a continuation of the ongoing partnership between the Swiss Secretariat for Economy (SECO) and KfW in Zenica, for the im- provement of the water supply system, capacity de- velopment of the Public Water Utility, and post-flood recovery and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
