Strengthening Nursing in BiH

Manuals and guidelines

As part of the Strengthening Nursing in Bosnia and Herzegovina Project, a number of important manuals and guidelines were developed and published. Their goal is to strengthen the capacity of nurses and the entire health system in the field of nursing care in order to improve the scope and quality of services provided by nurses to the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among them are the following publications:

1.    Handbooks with standard operating procedures for nurses


Standard operating procedures are written instructions for nurses that describe in detail how certain tasks are to be performed. They are are one of basic tools for practice standardization and ensurance of high-quality and safe nursing care. Working groups appointed by entity ministries of health have developed a set of handbooks with standard operating procedures for nurses at all health care levels. The manuals are designed to have a practical and educational purpose, and based on technical literature, knowledge, experience and best practice.

2.    Guidelines for the improvement of community nursing:

The guidelines aim to create a standardized framework for the content of community nursing services for service beneficiaries, and particularly for vulnerable and socially excluded groups. The useful value of this document is significant for the management structures of health centers and municipalities, as well as health policy makers in the field of nursing care, the ministry of health and health insurance funds. The guidelines define the way to implement community nursing services at municipal level

3.    Handbook: Communication in Health, 2023

The goal of the handbook is to promote effective communication and interpersonal skills that will improve professional healthcare for patients and reduce medical errors that may occur as a result of poor communication practices. The manual is also an operational platform for building communication skills that result in satisfactory and compassionate patient care.
