Ambassador of Switzerland Discusses Neutrality and Diplomacy at IUS

The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted the Swiss Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Daniel Hunn, at the session of the ongoing Shuttle Diplomacy Talks organised by the Balkan Studies Centre at IUS.

Ambassador Hunn's presentation was entitled "Swiss Diplomacy: Neutrality as a Foreign Policy Concept". Drawing on Switzerland's long tradition of neutrality, he provided valuable insights into the implications and challenges associated with this unique foreign policy stance. Of particular interest was his discussion of Switzerland's non-membership of the European Union or the NATO alliance, highlighting the complexities and advantages of maintaining neutrality in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.

Ambassador Hunn also offered a nuanced analysis of current global issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. He also briefly touched on the political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, providing the audience with a comprehensive understanding of Switzerland's perspective on regional affairs.

Following the presentation, the floor was opened for an extensive question and answer session, allowing interested students to engage directly with the Ambassador. This interactive exchange gave participants the opportunity to explore topics of interest in depth and gain first-hand insight into the intricacies of Swiss diplomacy.

As the Shuttle Diplomacy Talks continue to facilitate dialogue between diplomats, scholars and students, they play a crucial role in promoting diplomacy and cooperation in the Balkan region and beyond.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr Ahmet Yıldırım, Rector of the IUS, Dr Hamza Preljević, Director of the Balkan Studies Centre, and Velida Handžić-Mirica, Head of the University Communications Office, for extending a warm welcome to Ambassador Hunn.
